Perry's attempts to gain mainstream fame were disastrous. Prior to any new music could be released the two major labels had signed and were able to drop Perry. Capitol Records released Perry's Ur So Gay EP in 2007, and received little attention for its jolly playful track. The song I Kissed a Girl was a more bold ode to sexism that was that was accompanied by a slashing electro-pop rhythm. I Kissed A Girl became an instant hit, but it soon sparked controversy. Critics argued that it encouraged sexual relationships between gay and straight men, however others believed that the scene that depicted in it attracted more male fantasies. I Kissed a Girl became an international number-one single due to its combination of excitement and an elegant tune. It also helped her sell more albums, such as One of the Boys. Hot N Cold, Perry's lively and sharply-tongued album that included the second single that became a hit, also became a huge hit. The album that Perry wrote herself sold more than 3 million copies.
